Thursday 7 February  overcast and rain.

Last night after dinner the locals wanted to dance so we got up and danced along. Most sat down after one song and I felt obliged to continue so as not to be disrespectful. Even Ann who always wants to dance deserted me. I kept going for another two songs before I had to retire! Took it for the group.

Heard rain on our tent roof twice through the night. We wake to heavy rain and hail! We had to make a dash to the breakfast tent. Interesting on how we will make it back to the bus. There is a break and the sky clears a bit, I can hear the sound of a waterfall, so I go exploring and find it around the back of our campsite. There is a small runoff of water and I trace it back to the falls. Take a few photos and head back, the small runoff is now a creek and I am just able to cross it to get back to the campsite.

We head off from the campsite about 8.45, the bags are in the back and we are in the cabin. They are all Toyota hilux dual cab utes. As we near where the buses are the desert is like mud flats and water is covering a large area. After dropping us off the boys decide to have some fun and start drifting and spinning their Toyota’s on the now mud flats!

We are on our way and in the distance you can see low cloud, for the first bit it is flat, and then we start to climb, we reach the top and continue along a ridge above the valley, we come across an enormous wind farm and then face a white out from the cloud. This continues with rain until we reach Little Petra. The Jordanians claim it is fake Petra as it was built to trade with passing caravans but keep Petra hidden. The Bedouin tribe that lived in the caves at Petra, the Bidal, were forcibly
removed to ensure protection of the site, in return they were provided with free housing and the sole right to operate shops etc in Petra. Our guide tells us that even though they may look poor they are very wealthy. It is still foggy when we reach Little Petra so we cannot see the full grandeur of it but it has a surreal feeling about it as we walk through the narrow rock passageways and look at the caves etc. if this is the fake one the real one must be fantastic. We get to our hotel in Petra at 1.30 and our guide is hopeful that the cloud will lift in time for the Petra by night - we all hope so.
